Biography

Dr. Steinert is an internationally recognized leader in refractive surgery, cataract surgery, and corneal transplantation. Dr. Steinert’s background is highlighted by his numerous high-profile research studies and his renowned refractive surgery technique. Dr. Steinert was an original investigator of the excimer laser in 1983, and remains at the forefront of innovative development in refractive surgery.
Dr. Steinert is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Harvard Medical School and a Surgeon in Ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Boston Eye Surgery and Laser Center. He maintains an international practice at Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston. He is the Medical Monitor for the U.S. clinical trials of Summit Technology’s excimer laser as well as Allergan Surgical’s multifocal intraocular lens. He leads active research projects in refractive surgery, intraocular lens surgery and corneal surgery.

Dr. Steinert has been named in each edition of Best Doctors in America. He is the only ophthalmologist to be named in three separate areas: refractive surgery, cataract surgery and corneal surgery. He has received the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Senior Honor Award. Ophthalmology Times named him one of the 100 best ophthalmologists; Boston Magazine recognized him as being among the top ophthalmologists in the city; he has biographical listings in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World . Dr. Steinert has been a visiting professor at numerous institutions, including Yale University, Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Eye and Ear Institute in Pittsburgh, University of California at San Diego, University of Southern California’s Doheny Eye Institute, University of Michigan’s W.K. Kellogg Eye Center, University of Toronto, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and Georgetown University. In addition, he has presented five named lectureships.

Dr. Steinert serves on the editorial board of Ophthalmology, The Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery , and Ophthalmic Surgery and Lasers . He has authored and co-authored four major textbooks, including the recent Refractive Surgery as well as the authoritative text Cataract Surgery . In addition, Dr. Steinert has written over 40 book chapters and over 80 scientific research articles. He teaches and lectures extensively throughout the United States and internationally.

Currently, Dr. Steinert is on the Executive Committee of the Refractive Surgery Interest Group of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has completed terms on the Scientific Advisory Board of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the Board of Directors, International Society of Refractive Surgery.

Dr. Steinert graduated first in his class from Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts, and went on to Harvard College where he graduated summa cum laude in 1973. He received a M.D. degree from Harvard Medical School in 1977 and did his residency in ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He was a Visiting Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1983 to 1985.
