Occasionally, microsurgical removal of the natural lens of the eye is performed to improve optical focusing errors. The procedure is identical to modern state-of-the-art cataract surgery. The natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. The optical power of the artificial lens eliminates the refractive error of the patient. While this procedure is identical to cataract surgery, health insurance will not cover clear lens extraction to correct a refractive error without a cataract present.
Range. This procedure is generally reserved for patients whose refractive error is outside
the range of LASIK, particularly for more severe levels of farsightedness (high hyperopia)
or nearsightedness (high myopia).
