Clinical Interests
Dr. Steinert is recognized internationally for his broad range of expertise,
his extensive teaching and his groundbreaking research in eye surgery. In the
widely cited resource, Best Doctors in America (Woodward/White, 1997),
Dr. Steinert is the only ophthalmologist selected by his peers for exceptional
expertise in three separate subspecialties: refractive surgery, cataract
surgery, and corneal surgery.
In the just-published guide, America's Top Doctors (Castle Connolly,
2001), Dr. Steinert is also recognized in the fields of cataract surgery,
refractive surgery, and corneal surgery. He is the only doctor in New England
recognized in any of these subspecialties, and one of only four New England
opthalmologists listed.
In 1988, he received the Honor Award from the American Academy of
Ophthalmology, and in 1998 the Senior Honor Award, both in recognition of his
extensive contributions to teaching in the field. Also of note, he has served
as Visiting Professor on nine occasions at other institutions, and has
delivered six named lectureships. Dr. Steinert currently holds the academic
position of Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the Harvard
Medical School.

Steinert is widely published. He has authored four textbooks, over 50 textbook
chapters, nine educational videotapes, and 100 scientific articles in
peer-review journals.
Dr. Steinert uses his background in ophthalmic technology to improve and
develop new techniques and instrumentation for surgery and laser therapy. Early
in his career, Dr. Steinert received an appointment as a Visiting Scientist at
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Building on that experience and
training at MIT, combined with his medical education at the Harvard Medical
School and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Dr. Steinert has been at
the forefront of new developments in his fields of interest for nearly two
decades. In addition to his extensive writing, Dr. Steinert lectures nationally
and internationally, serves as an Examiner for the American Board of
Ophthalmology, and sits on the Editorial Boards of three professional journals,
including Ophthalmology, the official journal of the American Academy of
Ophthalmology and the most widely cited professional journal in ophthalmology.
In the spring of 2000, Dr. Steinert was elected to the Executive Committee of
the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He currently serves as
Secretary, and ultimately will rise to a term as President.
Dr. Steinert has served as the Medical Monitor for a number of FDA studies,
including the extensive testing of the excimer laser that lead to the first
approval of the excimer laser for laser vision correction in 1995. As Medical
Monitor, he assists in the design, medical review of issues and outcomes, and
scientific presentation of study results.
Dr. Steinert holds five U.S. Patents for inventions of medical devices.
