ARRAY® Multifocal Lens
Intraocular lens (IOL) technology has evolved rapidly over the past decade, and cataract
patients may wish to discuss their IOL choice directly with Dr. Steinert. The ARRAY® IOL
is the first and only lens that can potentially restore a full range of vision for cataract patients.
The ARRAY® IOL is designed to provide good distance vision, intermediate vision,
and near vision. Of all the intraocular lenses available today, the Array most closely approximates the eye’s natural lens. In most patients, the ARRAY® can provide functional range of vision that cannot be attained with other IOLs. The ARRAY® can reduce the
need for glasses in activities like reading, viewing text on a computer screen, or
watching a movie.
On May 3, 2000, the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) awarded special New Technology intraocular lens status to the ARRAY® multifocal IOL. HCFA explained that “clinical data and evidence demonstrate that these lenses have specific clinical advantages and superiority over existing lenses."
In 1999, Dr. Steinert won an "Oscar" Award at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery annual meeting for his educational videotape on proper management
of the multifocal IOL.
While posterior capsulotomy is usually effective, as with any surgical procedure, rare complications can occur such as swelling or detachment of the retina, and loss of vision.
