The excimer laser provides an innovative treatment option for a number of superficial
corneal disorders. PTK is the removal of the anterior layers of a diseased cornea using the excimer laser. Excimer laser photoablation can etch corneal tissue safely and precisely, leading to a smooth, uniform surface. Disorders affecting the corneal surface include corneal erosion and dystrophies, corneal irregularities, and
superficial scars.

PTK is not a refractive surgical procedure. It is a treatment to correct damage caused by a diseased cornea. PTK uses the same excimer laser as does PRK but does not usually alter the final refractive state of the eye.
